Introducing Safety Schemes in Procurement (SSiP) Assessor Training

When the revised Construction (Design & Management) Regulations came into force in April 2007, a concept known as Stage 1 Core Criteria was introduced. This criterion is used for assessing health and safety competence of contractors and consultants working in the construction industry. Such an assessment is often referred to as a pre-qualification scheme.

There are currently a large number of pre-qualification schemes serving the construction industry. The CDM based competence criteria therefore provided an opportunity for there to be mutual recognition between these H&S pre-qualification schemes.

To facilitate mutual recognition between the participating health and safety pre-qualification schemes the SSiP forum developed. This, it was agreed, would remove the need for multiple registrations by construction organisations against a similar set of requirements.

It was also anticipated that the scheme would actively advise and influence clients as to the suitable interpretation of H&S standards in UK schemes. This, it was hoped, would improve standards within the construction industry in general.

An important element in the mutual recognition of Stage 1 assessments is ensuring a consistent approach by assessors working for SSiP members. To support this, the International Register of Certificated Auditors (IRCA) has developed, in collaboration with SSiP, and with the kind support of the Health & Safety Executive, a certification programme for assessors working under the SSiP umbrella. This certification focuses on the core competence requirements that are common to assessors working for all SSiP members, and recognises that the assessment processes and additional requirements differ from member to member.

This course is a critical requirement in the process of individuals becoming certified as IRCA registered SSiP assessors.

Who Should Attend?

This course is essential for those who will undertake Stage 1 Core Criteria assessments under the SSiP umbrella, or who will be involved in the management of assessments within the construction industry. The course does not require any previous assessment experience; however a recognised construction health and safety qualification is beneficial to course delegates.

Course Objectives:

To enable delegates to effectively plan, perform, communicate and report the results of Stage 1 Core Criteria assessments and to help delegates understand the key skills and competencies required when performing an assessment.

What Are The Benefits?

This course, combined with the necessary assessment experience and pre-qualifications, satisfies the formal requirement for those wishing to register with the IRCA as an SSiP Assessor.

SSiP Assessor Training — In-House Courses

In-house courses can be arranged for organisations wishing to use their own premises and own documentation. Courses are for up to 10 delegates or, under special conditions, more if required. These courses can offer a more cost effective option, within the requirements of the course specification, and can be designed to closely match your specific requirements. More than 10 delegates require an increased number of tutors which, depending on the number of delegates, can adversely affect the delivery style and may increase costs.

Discounts are available for SSiP members and for organisations booking large numbers of delegates on this course. Please contact us to discuss your requirements. We pride ourselves on being flexible and always considering the needs of our customers.

Delivery of SSiP Assessor Training and our Course Tutor

A combination of presentations, guided exercises and highly interactive role-play exercises involving simulated assessments makes this course both significant and enjoyable for participants. Our course leader, David Riley, is a trained health and safety practitioner and experienced auditor with extensive practical management experience across a wide range of sectors including the construction industry. David, on behalf of IRCA, developed the Assessor Competency Specification and course content being presented. David was also the tutor for all the pilot courses run prior to the official launch of the IRCA registered programme in March 2011, and as such has extensive experience in dealing with issues raised by new and experienced assessors who attend the training.
