Health and Safety Management

What is Health and Safety (H&S)?

Health and safety is concerned with protecting the safety, health and welfare of people engaged in work or employment. The goal is to foster a safe work environment. As a secondary effect, it may also protect colleagues, family members, employers, customers, suppliers, nearby communities, and other members of the public who are impacted by the workplace environment. Health and Safety is often abbreviated to H&S.

Do you need a Health and Safety Policy?

If your organisation employs five or more people it must have a written Health and Safety policy and a Health and Safety Management System to continually assess and document action on identifiable risks.

J A D - OSHCR Registered Health and Safety Consultants

J A D Associates is an OSHCR registered consultancy. This means we are qualified to help almost all organisations with health and safety management. Our services include inspections, audits and assessments.

Creating Health and Safety Management Systems

The J A D Associates' approach to Health and Safety is to create a practical, working system and not to produce a set of files that merely sits on the shelf.

We believe that effective Health and Safety systems are those that are integrated with the other aspects of the organisation's management systems such as Quality Assurance, Environmental Management and Human Resources Management.

Our aim is to assist our clients by reviewing working practices, carrying out appropriate risk assessments and by identifying sensible control measures. We also ensure compliance with legislation via practical management processes and timely and bespoke solutions.

This includes:

Health and Safety Audits

Health and Safety Training

This integrated approach ensures that Health and Safety is taken into account appropriately and managed proportionally as a result of meaningful reviews and targeted auditing.

On Site Health & Safety Inspections and Audits

We can independently monitor and audit Health & Safety arrangements at your site and produce related documents, including project specific Method Statements, Risk Assessments, Operating Procedures and Policies

We can provide a service to independently monitor and audit Health & Safety arrangements at a particular location, facility or site.

What's included in a Health and Safety Inspection?

Inspections generally cover all aspects of operations as they relate to the workforce, contractors and to the general public. Regular site inspections can be carried out using site-specific checklists which greatly reduce the time and cost of the safety inspections needed to cover the requirements of UK safety legislation.

With the agreement of the client, we will record inspections and findings, with digital photography for inclusion on reports and close-out presentations. Visual records are an excellent way of monitoring Health and Safety performance and changes that occur on a site. They also provide bespoke material for training and workforce induction.

Following a safety inspection, we will produce a report outlining areas of both good and poor practice and suggested remedies that could assist in increasing Health and Safety performance throughout the company.

Do I need to make a Risk Assessment?

The Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999 requires employers to undertake 'a suitable and sufficient' risk assessment of their operations to quantify the risk to employees and other people affected by the operations (such as contractors, visitors, general public, etc).

Our risk assessment services are carried out within your organisation, that is on site and among your workforce.

Effective and meaningful risk assessments are generally produced as a result of observations, interviews and discussions with those involved in activities and reviews of documentation, such as accident records.

HSE's '5 Steps to Risk Assessment'

We follow the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) '5 Steps to Risk Assessment' methodology:

  • Identification of hazards
  • Identification of persons at risk
  • Evaluation of risks arising from hazards
  • Recording of assessment findings
  • Monitoring and review of assessment

Producing Operating Procedures or Method Statements

There may be particular operations or processes carried out on site where written procedures, operating instructions, method statements, etc, are required due to the nature of the task. These written statements are used for reference by the work force, line management, and regulatory inspectors or as part of a Health & Safety or integrated management system.

Method Statements may also be used as part of a training process to spell out the right steps to take, to ensure that a hazardous operation is performed safely and efficiently.

We can prepare the necessary procedural documentation using easy to follow flow charts and, where required, photographs to demonstrate the correct practice.

Affordable Safety Training Services

To fully support the documents our audit generates, we also provide on-site training.

J A D Associates will assist your organisation in identifying areas where training is needed, developing bespoke training modules, and delivering training on your premises to minimise disruption to the working schedule.
